work it!
sell it!
get it!
yeah, uh huh, work it out!
ha
Okay, so first things first...i need to apologize for my absence from the show, the belting was a little too much for me, and by belting, i mean blogging, but you already knew that DUUUHHH :)
Yeah, i have been super busy!!! I mean voice lessons with Patti Lupone, shopping with Mandy Patinkin, sushi with Angela Lansbury...etc etc...ya know, THE LIFE OF A BROADWAY STAR.. ;) loollllll
but never fear. I'm here (color purple anyone?) and i am telling you, i'm not going (effie?) because this is the moment (Frank Wildhorn?) and i'm the KING OF THE WORLD!!! (songs for a new world fierce)
Okay so here is the topic: Disney. Power-Mixing.
i hope you are as excited as I am about it!
ps-Emily Nicole Hawkins and Rachel Grave Van Marter, this one's for you! ;)
I have aaalllllllwayyyssss loved disney. Duh! Who doesn't? That's our childhood memories, that is our roots....it's just...BROADWAY. But like, it really is! They are animated movie musicals, that basically follow the same format as a musical so...which is why they translate soooo perfectly on stage (Lion King, Mary Poppins, Beauty and the Beast etc alan menken etc..
BUT what is the most important part of a disney movie...is how fierce the lead, sassy girl’s song is. Because, let's be real...THEY ARE GOOD FUCKING SONGS!!!!
Part of your world: Fierce.
I won't say i'm in love: Fierce.
Reflection: Fierce.THE LIST GOES ON AND ON!!!!!!
But let's be clear. Those disney girls are stars, and are all stunning broadway stars and whatnot. BUT
None of them are really BELTERS.
They just aren't (Except the fierce black one, but she is too new!)
AND YOU KNOW WHAT!? that is totally fine! IT IS!! I hate to admit it, but if we just had only belters on earth...it would get old. (SORRY AJA, SORRY CAISSIE!)
We NEED other people.
I know everyone thinks all i care about are Belters, BUT that's NOT TRUE!!! I love power-mixers!!
Power Mixer- noun or verb- Female MT's whose singing operates solely in their mixed voice. Even when their ranges can support singing in head or chest voice, Power Mixes ignore that and choose to mix everything. This gives the desired effect of having no break in one's voice and as of recent contemporary musical theatre composing Power Mixers have been in great demand. Beware, a Power Mixer can fool you into thinking that she is belting or using her head voice; but with a trained MT ear one can soon spot Power Mixers of all strength and quality.
Anyway, disney power-mixing is on my brain tonight and i think i should use this blog to celebrate the broadwayness of their songs.
Now, I would go through every Disney Power-mixer known to mankind and dissect and analyze the fiercness of their power-mixing…but that would take a lot of my time, and wasting time is not equity. So I just wont.
But I will highlight the best of the best here we go:
Ariel (The Little Mermaid, as sung by Jodi Benson.) Ok, Ariel is like, sooooo fierce. She’s this hot ginger mermaid, who has the hottest body, wears a bikini 24/7, and she likes playing with “things.” WHAT GUY DOESN’T LIKE THAT?!?!? Part of your world is so legit, and she has this incredible brightness to her tone that I’m obsessed with. “BRIGHT YOUNG WOMEN, SICK OF SWIMMING, READY TO STAND!”
Meg (Hercules, as sung by Susan Egan.) Meg is among the sassiest of the bunch, like this girl works it, and just reeks of sex appeal. First of all, love her getup, the dress is fab. And, I love her funky ponytail. She’s fucking brillz. Second, not only does she power-mix (almost to the point of belting.) the SHIT out of her song, BUT, she has a chorus black stunner belterz, who are always sellin it. She is so conflicted, I’m obsessed. I won’t say I’m in love is broadway.
Jasmine (Aladdin, as sung by Lea Salonga.) Ugh. Love Jasmine. How dare she be so exotic and luxurious, how dare she live in the fiercest crib, and how dare she casually have a tiger as a pet?!?!?! HOW DARE SHE?!?!?! She is legit. And when she’s on the magic carpet with her boo during a whole new world…omg…her voice. Lea Salonga (REPRESENT BROADWAY, GET IT!) sings the part perfectly. Way to go Lea.
Pocahontas (Pocahontas (PS HOW DARE SHE AND MULAN HAVE THEIR NAMES BE THE TITLE OF THEIR MOVIES, HOW BROADWAY OF THEM!) as sung by Judy Kuhn.)THE FIERCEST IN MY OPINION. I LOVE THIS CHICK, SHE CAN SING TO ME ANYTIME. FOR REAL. %$#Q%$?T$GRE%$#TY%$#!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love herrrrrrr. Not only is she stunning, but she not one, but TWO ammmmaaaazzzzzing songs that are so next stop broadway!!! Why hasn’t Pocahontas gone broadway??? SOMEBODY BETTER GET ON THAT!
Mulan (Mulan, as sung by Lea Salonga (SHE POWER-MIXES IN 2 DISNEY MOVIES, THAT'S SUPER FIERCE!)) Asian and FIERCE. Enough said.
Ok, wow that was fun.
Just curious, what do you fiercies think? Who is the best Disney Power-mixer?!?!
So, that’s all for now. I must go and prepare for the final days of my FRESHMAN YEAAARR!!! AHHHHHH, it’s insane, I can’t deal, too much.
Love you allllll so much. I’ll try to get back to the blogging more frequently. i missed this.
BROADWAY OUT
